More abortions in Germany
Central Europe
In Germany, 25,800 women had an abortion in the first quarter of 2022, as shown by statistics released by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. That means that the number of terminations of pregnancies is increasing.
Idea reports that the number of abortions has increased with 4.8 per cent, compared to the same period last year. Calculations based on the new data show that 1,980 babies will be aborted every week this year. In 2021, the number of abortions decreased, possibly due to the Covid pandemic.
The number of late abortions – those after three months of pregnancy – has also increased, TAZ reports. In Germany, abortions after the first trimester are only allowed under certain conditions, such as health risks for the mother.
According to the new statistics, 70 per cent of the women who had an abortion are between 18 and 34 years old. About 40 per cent of the women did not give birth before their abortion. TAZ writes that about 4 per cent of abortions concerned pregnancies for medical reasons or because of sexual offences.
