Muslim dating app offers to pay fines for wearing illegal burkini in France
Western Europe
In France, wearing a burkini is prohibited on public beaches and swimming pools. Now, a Muslim dating app offers to pay the fines for women who illegally wear face-covering cloth.
"Many Muslim women will have to make an unfair choice: escape the heatwave by swimming in a bikini or pay a fine for choosing modest attire. It is unfair", the marketing team of Muzz, based in the United Kingdom, said. In that country, there is no burkini ban.
Following the French Supreme Court ruling to uphold the burkini ban, an amount of 25.000 euros has been reserved to cover fines, the Muzz team says. The dating platform currently has more than 6 million active members. This reports the blog Creapills.
Taste
Muzz's approach is not to everyone's taste. According to the French Ministry of the Interior, Muzz's statement is an "illegal announcement". The Ministry claims to French daily Le Figaro to have launched legal proceedings against the application.
The app makers seem prepared, however. "The management is ready and is aware that this involves risks from a legal point of view."
