Hungarian couples should be able to have as many children as they wish, Hungarian President Katalin Novák said during a speech at the ITI Catholic University in Austria last week.

According to the President, education and the awareness that human life is essential are key to a successful family policy. That was reported by About Hungary.

In addition, Novák argued that it is important for governments to consider the importance of the role of grandparents in families and think about ways in which parents can combine their family lives with a career.

She also defended the value of a traditional family that is still protected by Hungary's constitution. That defines marriage as "a union based on a voluntary decision between a man and a woman" and protects "the family which forms the basis for the survival of the nation."

Hungary is known for its family support. About 5 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is spent on financial support to families. According to Novák, the number of marriages doubled, and the number of abortions halved in the past ten years due to government measures.
