The Portuguese Parliament approved a draft law on Friday legalising euthanasia and assisted suicide. Now, the country's President has to decide over it.

The law establishes that "non-punishable medically assisted death" can occur by persons whose will is "recent, serious, free and clear". It was the third time the Portuguese Parliament voted in favour of a euthanasia law. This time, compared to the last decree, deputies dropped the "fatal disease" requirement.

The previous two times, the law had been vetoed by the country's President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. In his earlier readings, the President found the new bill approved by Parliament too vague.
