German Christian police officers want action against migrants
Central Europe
Emergency services in several German cities were attacked on New Year’s Eve. According to the chairman of the Christian Police Association, migrants are the problem.
In an interview with the German Christian press agency IDEA, Chief Detective Inspector Holger Clas (Hamburg) criticised politicians and the media. According to Clas, they have reacted with the same reflexes to the increasing violence against police officers, firefighters and paramedics for years. “We would like the causes to be analysed and named openly.”
Clas also has an idea of who the people behind the attacks are. “It is clear to everyone that these incidents often occur in deprived areas with a high proportion of migrants. Unfortunately, we often have to deal with people who reject the way we live,” says Clas. The emergency services experienced that people perceived them as representatives of the state, which some immigrants meet with inner distance and aggression.

The Association leader was also critical of the police union’s demand to introduce a general “ban on firecrackers”. Such a measure affects the vast majority of people who celebrate New Year’s Eve peacefully and does not help to combat the causes of violence against emergency services, he thinks.
On New Year’s Eve, the police and fire brigade in Berlin were required to perform almost 4,000 operations. They were attacked on at least 38 of their missions, writes the Sächsische Zeitung.
Drugs
According to the Evangelische Zeitung, most attackers are young men under the influence of drugs. The head pastor for police pastoral care in North Rhine-Westphalia, Dietrich Bredt-Dehnen, described the violent attacks on police and rescue services on New Year’s Eve as “very frightening”.
According to the evangelical theologian, the attackers are usually young, drunk men aged 16 to 24. In contrast to the usual operations, police officers would often encounter larger groups of people at the turn of the year, in which “dynamic operational situations” would then arise. Cities such as Cologne and Düsseldorf have issued firecracker bans in certain areas.
