Inhabitants of the Dutch municipality of Utrecht can get a free expert opinion that is required if they want to change their legal gender. The municipality will pay for it.

Mayor Sharon Dijkstra announced this last Thursday. That is reported by the Dutch news websites Nu.nl and RTV Utrecht. Anyone who wants to change his or her gender on his birth certificate and the national register, is required to present an expert opinion to the registry office.

To get such a statement, one needs to pay 65 euros. In addition, a consult is mandatory as well. The costs of this conversation amount to 250 euros. Utrecht says to reimburse both of these costs now. The municipality considers whether this new legislation can be implemented retroactively.

Inhabitants will still need to pay for their own ID cards. The municipality does not reimburse those because the budget would be insufficient.
