The Supreme Court in Moscow has ruled that LGBT propaganda is “extremist”. Activists who propagate gay values are banned from continuing this.

The German Deutsche Welle wrote about Thursday’s ruling.

In Russia, the traditional family of father, mother and kids is still seen as the leading image that has to be protected by the state. Propagating alternatives is seen as Western interference from “the international LGBT social movement” that threatens the Russian lifestyle.

The Ministry of Justice filed the lawsuit earlier this month, saying that authorities had identified “signs and manifestations of an extremist nature” by a “movement” operating in Russia. In its statement announcing the lawsuit, the ministry claimed that such activism included “incitement of social and religious discord.”

Max Olenichev, the human rights lawyer defending the Russian LGBT movement, commented to The Associated Press news agency before the hearing. According to him, does “the international civic LGBT movement” not exist. But because the court has condemned propagating the gay lifestyle as extremist, everybody defending homosexuality in Russia could be branded as extremist, he said.

The New York Times adds that this verdict comes in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war. President Putin has started this as a battle for “Russian traditional values.” To that end, the gay community is often portrayed as a potential Trojan horse for the West.
