Even when it's busy, try studying church history
Christian Life
Studying church history may not always seem practical in the business of everyday life. However, it can be incredibly encouraging, Chiara Lamberti finds.

Among the major figures in church history —those who have profoundly shaped Western thought— Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430) stands out as one of the most influential. Recognised as a giant of faith and thought in Christian tradition, Augustine’s story is particularly inspiring for mothers because of the pivotal role his mother’s unwavering faith played in his life.
We know a great deal about Augustine’s life because he wrote extensively, leaving behind a long autobiographical work in the form of a prayer, The Confessions. Born in North Africa to a pagan father and a Christian mother, Augustine’s path to faith was long and troubled.
As a young man, he rebelled against his mother’s teachings, exploring philosophy and joining Manichaeism in his search for “truth.”
Only after enduring spiritual struggles and embarking on long journeys did he finally convert to Christianity, eventually becoming one of the greatest theologians of his time.
Example
Augustine frequently acknowledged in his writings that throughout his intense spiritual journey toward recognising God’s grace, his mother’s unshakeable faith was the most significant influence on his life. Monica, a Christian woman from Tagaste in modern-day Algeria, practiced her faith with deep devotion.
Despite her challenging marriage to a pagan, Patricius, she persisted in her faith, ultimately witnessing her husband’s conversion near the end of his life. Monica worked to raise her children as Christians and suffered greatly when her intelligent and gifted son chose a life of reckless rebellion.
Augustine’s reflections on his mother reveal that she never wavered in her prayers and testimony for him. Though she endured great sorrow over her son’s choices, she never ceased praying. Later, as a bishop and Doctor of the Church, Augustine would write extensively about her, describing her faith as the most significant example he received. He credited his mother’s steadfast faith as more impactful on his life than the teachings of any other doctor or writer.
As a mother of young children, Monica’s example gives me great encouragement. I do not know what the future holds for my children, but her story teaches me that praying for them—their salvation and life choices—has a profound influence. My testimony, even if not recognised until years later, will impact my children’s lives.
If they stray from the Christian path I have taught, I must not let my faith become fragile. It does not mean that God has not heard my prayers or has no plan for them. In His grace, He may indeed be shaping one of the greatest voices of faith for generations to come!
