Pope Francis compared the war in Ukraine to the Holocaust of the Second World War. He referred in particular to the Reinhard operation in Poland. During that event, up to two million people were killed. Most victims were Jewish.

The Pope talked to Roman Catholic believers in Poland on Wednesday about remembering the German operation Reinhard during World War II. That is reported by the Dutch daily Reformatorisch Dagblad. “May the remembrance of this terrible event raise intentions and actions of peace by everyone”, the Pope said. He declared that history repeats itself at the moment, thereby referring to the war in Ukraine.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church becomes increasingly critical towards Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Moscow strongly protests against the statements of the Pope. Last month, Pope Francis compared the suffering in Ukraine to the “horrible genocide” in the thirties, when Soviet leader Joseph Stalin intentionally caused a famine in Ukraine. This event is also known as the Holodomor.

Since the start of the war in February, Pope Francis has offered several times to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. Yet, the countries have not used this option so far.
