Conversion therapy refers to practices aimed at changing an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity. The practice has been controversial in several countries.

In Europe, several countries believe in placing a ban on conversion therapy. Germany banned the practice in 2020, prohibiting medical interventions when it came to changing a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Violations to this law include fines and imprisonment.

In 2022, France criminalised the practice and now deems conversion therapy as psychological abuse . Belgium also followed suit by imposing penalties to those who attempt to change or suppress someone's sexual orientation or gender expression .

In Norway, the Parliament passed a law in 2023 banning conversion therapy. Violators can face up to three years in prison. Despite its passage, Christian communities became concerned about restrictions on pastoral care and freedom of expression. In Sweden, a government investigation found that LGBT individuals had adequate protections in place and considered a ban on conversion therapy unnecessary.

Finally, in Switzerland, its National Council voted in favor of banning conversion therapy, targeting practices to "cure" homosexuality.

In the rest of the EU, the debate regarding this practice continues.
