Less Norwegians go to church

The share of the Norwegian population that is a member of the Church of Norway fell from 71.3 per cent in 2016 to 64.9 per cent in 2021. In comparison, 85 per cent of the population were members of the Church in 1994.
From 2020 to 2021, the number of church members fell by 133,000 to 3,522,558, figures from Statistics Norway published on Wednesday show.
Norwegian daily Dagen reports that the proportion of newborns baptised in the Church has dropped steadily from eight out of ten in 2001 to less than half, 48.3 per cent, in 2021. The same development is also visible in church confirmation numbers. About 60 per cent of 15-year-olds chose to confirm themselves in the church in 2016 - last year the proportion was 51.6 per cent.
