Italy has a new National Coordinator for the fight against anti-Semitism. Prefect Giuseppe Pecoraro was appointed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni last week.

Meloni thanked his predecessor Professor Milena Santerini "for the precious work she has done in recent years at the Prime Minister's Office" and expressed "her best wishes to Prefect Pecoraro for the new position", the Government website reads.

Knowledge

Prefect Pecoraro says to be happy with his appointment, which gives him “the opportunity to lend a hand to the government and contribute to the fight against anti-Semitism" that is needed. That is reported by Shalom.it.

One of the priorities in his new function as anti-Semitism coordinator, is to dissolve neo-fascist associations, says Pecoraro, as reported by Italia Informa. Furthermore, he wants to increase knowledge among young people. “There are worrying signs of ignorance and little knowledge of history”, he stressed. “It is absurd that eighty years later, we are still talking about denial [of the Holocaust, ed.].”

Signal

The Union of Italian Jewish Communities is happy with the appointment. The president of the union, Noemi Di Segni, earlier urged the government to appoint a national coordinator, the European Jewish Congress writes. She then stressed that such a person is "an essential safeguard, which needs to be further strengthened." Di Segni sees the appointment as an important signal.

Furthermore, the president of the Jewish Communities thanked Prime Minister Meloni for the appointment and expressed her gratitude towards Professor Milena Santerini for the work she did. Thereby, Di Segni refers to the launch of a national strategy against anti-Semitism, guidelines for schools to deal with the problems and the agreement for the memory network with the State Railways.
