The number of marriages in The Netherlands has increased in 2022. In the same period, the number of registered partnerships decreased.

That reports the Reformatorisch Dagblad based on new statistics. Many of the marriages might have been postponed from the Covid years 2020 and 2021, but still the number in 2022 was 5,000 higher than in 2019.

Cohabiting got less popular last year. In 2022, more than 24,000 partnerships were registered, 2,000 less than the year before.

In total, there were 70,000 marriages, a plus of 13,000 compared to 2021. The number of partnership registrations was 24,000; a minus of 2,000. One if four couples has a partnership; the rest is married.

Record

Registered partnership has existed since 1998. At that time, same-sex couples often opted for it, which allowed them to formally record their relationship from that moment on.

From 2014, registered partnership became more and more popular, because it was then aligned with marriage for granting legal parenthood to fathers and partners in same-sex couples.
