Schoolgirls attacked at Protestant school Berlin
Central Europe
A mentally ill man attacked two schoolgirls with a knife at a Protestant school in Berlin. The school says to place its hope "in the Lord."
The sun shone, and the sky was blue when the police received an emergency call, RBB24 reports. A lone perpetrator had stabbed two girls, aged seven and eight, in a schoolyard in Germany's capital with a kitchen knife. The suspect, a 38-year-old man, was arrested at the school. The schoolgirls were taken to the hospital by a helicopter.
According to Tagesschau, the authorities do not yet know the motive of the man. According to the news outlet, the man may be mentally ill because of drug use. There should be "indications of a mental illness possibly induced by narcotics".
According to experts, the knife attack on the seven- and eight-year-old students at a primary school in Berlin-Neukölln was an "absolute isolated case and a tragedy". According to the current state of knowledge, the attack could not have been prevented, said the spokeswoman for the education administration.
Witness
According to sources at the school, about 30 students were witnesses of the attack at the elementary school. Psychologists are available to students, teachers and other educators. They will also provide pastoral care.
In a statement, the chairman of the foundation's board, Frank Olie, also expressed sympathy with the injured and with the pupils and staff "who had to witness this horrific act". Olie further wrote: "We now place our hope in the Lord. May he stand by us all in this difficult hour, especially the two students and their school community."
