European Union
An EU initiative that will open the door to unrestricted abortions is advancing, and a ban on religious leaders giving counsel to the LGBTQ community is up for debate.
In April 2024, a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) was registered (My Voice, My Choice) with a proposal to establish an EU abortion fund for EU citizens who do not have access to abortion facilities in their EU Member State.
This proposal was accepted by the European Commission on 1 September 2025. A hearing in the European Parliament also took place on 2 December 2025, and the European Commission will publish the result. On 25 February 2026, it will be a question of whether the ECI will turn this into an actual proposal.
If passed, this initiative will certainly become a threat to the pro-life efforts across the EU. What is seen as “expanding abortion access” for all will, in reality, become centres for annihilating our next generation. What is more, the My Voice, My Choice initiative dictates that financial support would come from the EU Commission for these abortion services and be passed on to Member States.
Voices within the European Commission say that the ECI will be accepted as a facultative mechanism, where Member States would have an “opt-in mechanism”. Despite this, the initiative would put undue pressure on all within the EU to carry out abortion services. It is also uncertain how these funds might actually be utilised by the states, leaving the door open for potential abuse.
Another problem: an unregulated industry that becomes a haven for abortion tourism. Women who come from EU states with restrictions or an outright abortion ban can travel to another EU state to have one. And all under the EU’s tab and its taxpayers!
Bert-Jan Ruissen, MEP for the Dutch political party SGP, has submitted written questions to the European Commission on how this ECI was funded. My Voice, My Choice currently has 30 full-time lobbyists in the European institutions to lobby in favour of the ECI.
I had written about this initiative last year in December. You can have a look at the full story. In the meantime, CNE hopes the initiative will be struck down by opposing EU MEPs and their relevant political parties.
What can you do to put a stop to this initiative?
The pro-life organisation, One of Us, has created a website (No Abortion Tourism) to get in touch with your Member State’s EU Commissioner. From there, you can send a message on how unlawful and destructive this initiative will be if passed. We encourage you to customise the message and send it out before next week.
Christian leaders face potential pastoral counselling ban on LGBTQ community
A blanket ban on conversion practices in the EU is currently up for debate. The term “conversion practices” differs from conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is defined as using therapeutic techniques to alter a person’s sexual orientation or gender. Conversion practices could go a step further with even a ban on counselling by religious leaders or pastors if someone is thinking about changing their gender identity.
Even the act of Christian leaders initiating such conversations could be considered unlawful if passed, according to Bert-Jan Ruissen, who is an MEP for the Dutch political party SGP. However, he heavily doubts EU competence in this matter. Find out more about what could be at stake here. The opportunity to share God’s Word and truth to the LGBTQ community may be silenced forever if we don’t speak up!
Ban on surrogacy
In November 2025, the European Parliament adopted a (non-binding) report on Gender Equality. This report also included a call on the European Commission to ban surrogacy in the EU. Different MEPs, such as Margarita de la Pisa (Spain, Patriots), Bert-Jan Ruissen (Netherlands, ECR) and Stephen Bartulica (Croatia, ECR) have requested a meeting with the European Commission to discuss this topic.
