The Dutch King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Máxima gave best wishes to the participants of the Canal Pride in Amsterdam last Saturday. The couple sent congratulations on the 25th edition of Pride Amsterdam and wished that everybody could be who they are “in freedom”.

“The freedom to be who you are and to love who you want is something we wish for everyone with all our hearts!” the King said. The Royal Family shared this message on Twitter, where they got many likes.

There has been no Canal Pride in Amsterdam for the last two years because of the corona pandemic. The event attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, probably half a million.

Rainbow

According to the Dutch Reformatorisch Dagblad, the King’s support might be remarkable but is not unique for the royal family. Queen Máxima earlier visited an event about the social acceptance of homosexuality. And King Willem-Alexander visited the LGBT umbrella organisation COC in 2016. Also, the former Queen, Beatrix, is known for supporting the rainbow community.

From other sources, it is known that the King’s daughters are quite used to gay couples visiting the home of the royals. Last year, Prime Minister Rutte decided that there would be no constitutional barrier against a same-sex marriage in the royal family.
