"Numerous fallen Russian soldiers are Baptists"
Eastern Europe
"Numerous" members of the Russian Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists have died as soldiers in the Ukraine war.
The Union's administrative head, Pastor Vladimir Miskevich, told this to the church journalist William Yoder after a service in Moscow. The German press agency Idea reports this.
Yoder is an American who lived in Germany and Russia for decades. He has worked for the Evangelical Alliance in Moscow too.
Miskevich assured that the churches wanted to do everything possible to assist the bereaved families. He also said that the deaths of people on both sides were equally painful for the Russian communities.
Miskewitsch did not want to give exact numbers of victims. The Federation has 1,674 congregations with around 68,000 members.
Last October, the former leader of the Baptist Union and now-general secretary of the Evangelical Alliance in Russia, Vitaly Vlasenko, told CNE that many Baptists tend to pacifism and try not to be mobilised in the war.
