For centuries, Ukraine has been a "buffer zone" between the Western world in Europe and the Eastern world in Russia. This goes back to the split in the Christian church in 1054 in the Western and Eastern church, but can be traced back much earlier.
After the fall of the Soviet Union around 1990, the hope existed that Ukraine could become a land "in between" again. But so far, it is clear that that has not worked. Ukraine feels that it has to choose between either Western Europe (with NATO and the European Union) or Russia. And Russia would not accept Ukraine to become a member state of NATO or the EU.
