Representatives of the major religious communities in Spain have united in their fight for the right to life and the dignity of people.

Roman Catholics, Orthodox believers, Evangelicals and Muslims published an Interfaith Declaration on the Dignity of human life on Wednesday, Actualidad Evangelica reports. They did so after the Constitutional Court ruled that an abortion law from 2010 was not unconstitutional. In addition, the current debate on end-of-life issues is another reason the communities unite their voices.

Representatives of the Islamic Commission of Spain, the Federation of Evangelical Religious Entities of Spain (FEREDE), the Orthodox Church of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Romania, the Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, the Spanish Episcopal Church and the Roman Catholic Church signed the document.

Unborn

Before they did so, Carolina Bueno, the executive Secretary of FEREDE, read a portion from the Bible. Also, the Secretary of the Islamic Commission read some parts of the Koran.

Bueono stressed that the declaration was not only symbolic for the moment. Instead, “it is a form of making visible the work that all the faiths present here do daily for the defence of life”, she said at the occasion. Reformed Episcopal bishop Carlos López Lozano added that the role of religious communities is to “defend the life of the unborn and in all areas.”

The spokesman for the Spanish bishops said that the defence of life “is a common denominator among religions”, as reported by Europa Press. Therefore, the religious communities want to send a “proactive and positive message to Spanish society that faith is not an obstacle to life or for the dignity of the person, but rather the opposite.”

Gift

“Life is a gift from God for the whole creation”, the statement, which is published by Religion Digital and other media, reads. In addition, it points out that the dignity of human life does not depend on certain circumstances. “It is an intrinsic quality of every human being, whose rights must always be respected.”
