In 2022, almost half of the women who got pregnant in Denmark from a sperm donor did not come from the country itself.

In total, 43 per cent of all artificial inseminations in Denmark were performed on foreigners, Kristeligt Dagblad reports. Last year, 2825 foreign women travelled to Denmark for a so-called IUI-D treatment. This corresponds to 43 per cent of all women who used the treatment to get pregnant.

Danish legislation concerning sperm donors is much more liberal than in other countries, Liza Diers explains to Kristeligt Dagblad. Diers is the director and owner of Diers Klinik, a fertility clinic in Aarhus. In addition, the treatments are cheaper than abroad, and the waiting time is shorter, she adds. Also, the selection of donors is large, and women can get quite a bit of information about their backgrounds.

Psychological profile

The reason why women, mostly singles and lesbians, travel to Denmark for treatment differs per country, Diers says. German women must provide a statement that proves their financial stability to sustain a child in order to get access to fertility treatments, for example. They must also acquire a psychological profile, and lesbian couples cannot get treatments everywhere in the country.

Women can select a sperm donor based on their features. Most popular are blue eyes and blonde hair, Diers notices. In addition, the preferred height of a man is between 180 and 185 centimetres. Women also pay close attention to the educational level of their sperm donor. The more education someone has, the greater his popularity.
