Pro-life organisations in Europe are getting more nervous after the European Parliament passed an initiative to make abortion more accessible across the EU.
The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) sponsored by the pro-abortion organisation, My Voice, My Choice, would like to see the right to unlimited access to abortion for every EU citizen, even in member states that have abortion restrictions, according to a Market Screener report.
My Voice, My Choice created the initiative as a “voluntary opt-in financial solidarity mechanism”. Once adopted by EU member states, abortion services would be provided and covered under EU funding.
The organisation gathered over 1.12 million signatures before being passed over to MEPs in the EU parliament. In order for an initiative to be considered, it must gather over 1 million signatures from at least seven EU states. The proposal was adopted with a 358 to 202 vote, as reported in the EU Parliament’s press release.
Legal challenges
Supportive MEPs endorsed the European Citizens’ newest initiative and saw its passage as a way for women to have an abortion, even if they lack legal access to them in their member state.
However, challenges remain in its enforcement at the national level. Several EU states still have legal regulations that limit or prohibit abortions in most cases. Yet, MEPs would like to call on those EU countries to reform their abortion laws and have them align with international human rights regulations, which are quite permissive when it comes to abortions.
The proposal will now be handed to the EU Commission, where it will be decided if any legislative or non-legislative measures need to be put in place before its adoption by the Council. The EU Commission intends to review the initiative next year in March, the press release explains.
European Citizens' Initiative (ECI)
The EU provides a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) tool that allows EU citizens to create and propose new legislation for the Commission. Since the ECI’s adoption, at least 13 initiatives have successfully been made into law, according to the EU Parliament.
