Latvia’s population is shrinking
In the first quarter of 2022, Latvia still had over double the number of deaths as the number of births.
This was reported on Friday by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.
In the first three months of this year, 8,595 deaths were registered. The number is 423 deaths, or 4.7 per cent smaller than that recorded in the first quarter of the previous year when a significant increase was recorded from 2020 to 2021.
A decline was also recorded in the number of births. The number of births registered in the first three months of the year – 3,939 children – is 2 per cent smaller than that recorded in the corresponding period of 2021.
In total, the number of inhabitants of Latvia accounted for 1,870,000 people. The median age in Latvia is 43.9 years, making it one of the ‘older’ European countries. In 2018, Latvia recorded%20recorded%20in%201965.) the highest divorce rate in Europe.
