Work 24 hours a day; no holidays, no breaks, no pay. Who would apply for such a job? Mothers do it voluntarily. Time to celebrate their value!

This weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day, a holiday in honor of mothers that is celebrated in countries throughout the world. It is a great holiday to celebrate our mothers and to thank them for their love and sacrifice.

Mothers play a huge and vital role in the upbringing of kids, as well as in building families. Mum is the first person to teach kids about love, she is the first guide in the child’s life journey. We raise kids to be grateful and thank their mums. However, kids will only fully understand and appreciate their mums when they become parents themselves.

The history of Mother's Day

Interestingly, during the Middle Ages, this custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parishes and their mothers on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. Later this became Mothering Sunday in Britain, where it continued into modern times, although it has largely been replaced by Mother’s Day.

Kids learn to appreciate their mothers more when they see how fathers treat them, or how both parents treat their grandparents on these special occasions and during normal days.

Sacrifice

In my family we did not celebrate Mother’s Day as it was not celebrated in eastern Europe. However, I was always amazed how nicely my dad treated my mum with flowers, sweets, nice words, and daily help with house chores. That gave me a good example of how a woman should be treated at home. While we all want appreciation and praise for what we do, mothers just do their work because of their sacrificial hearts and their love to us, not because they gain so much from it.

A parenting expert, Nikki Bush, and his team created a fake job vacancy “Director of Operations” and posted it online and in newspapers. Then they held real interviews to see who would apply for the job when knowing all the requirements.

Job candidates were shocked to hear what they were expected to do. They were expected to have perfect mobility so they could stand up on their feet and bend many times a day. Candidates should also have excellent negotiation skills and degrees in medicine, finances and cooking. During the day, there were no breaks and no time for lunch. In addition, candidates were supposed to stay with their associates all night.

Workload

The information shocked job candidates, they could not believe their ears. They asked about vacations and salary. However, the position would not grant any vacations. Moreover, during the holidays the workload would be doubled. And there was no salary.

All job candidates said it was impossible for them to take that job. Yet, there are billions of people who hold this position. They are the mothers who work many unpaid hours and have to be professional in many areas.

Let’s celebrate our mothers and grandmothers. And celebrate yourself and your calling to invest your life in kids. As we all long to see the outcomes of our sacrifice, let’s also enjoy the journey that takes so many years of our life.
