Mission is a calling of all Christians, not only of a special few, Anna believes. But how do you get young Christians involved?
Mission is at the heart of God's plan. If we read the Scriptures carefully, we will find numerous references to God's desire to be glorified in all nations and all places. The Great Commission is often quoted at mission conferences as "teaching all nations". God's kingdom includes diverse people and is never homogeneous.
Raising a generation with a heart for missions and love for other nations is our responsibility
Mission is not only meant to be a calling for a special group, like missionary "saints" who can go overseas to reach others for God. On the contrary, we are all called to be part of God's mission because we can reach others in our daily lives.
But how can we encourage young people to be part of the missionary work?
Raising a generation with a heart for missions and love for other nations is our responsibility as Christian leaders and parents. Here are some key ways to inspire youngsters to get involved.
Teach them about the world. Children often grow up understanding only their own culture, traditions and way of life. We can help them develop a global perspective by introducing them to different cultures, languages and traditions from an early age.
I myself experienced this when the war broke out in Ukraine. I felt displaced and lost, but my colleagues in the United States organised a special evening for school children to introduce them to Ukraine. The children learned about the war, prayed for Ukraine and made postcards for me with kind words of encouragement. It was a touching moment when I read their notes. Later, I sent the children a short video thanking them for praying for Ukraine. It was an amazing experience for both of us.
Tell them stories about missionaries and global workers who have dedicated their lives to serving others. Reading biographies of famous missionaries such as William Carey, Hudson Taylor, and Amy Carmichael can help young people understand the sacrifices and joys of missionary work.
As a family, attend missions, conferences and events. Pray together for missions and encourage generosity. Young Christians should learn that mission is a calling for all of God's church. And if someone travels to the mission field physically, others should support them financially and prayerfully. We are all called to be a part of the missionary work, and our involvement comes in all shapes and sizes.
Hudson Taylor said that God isn't looking for people of great faith but people who are willing to follow Him. Cultivating a child's heart is a long but rewarding process. We are raising the next generation who should be willing to follow God and have an open heart for missions. Our children are the future of our churches, missions and the Kingdom of God.
