Children must honour their parents. But how can you be such an honourable leader of your family? This is the way.

“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” The fifth commandment is a must to teach your children when they are little kids.
As a parent it is relatively easy to repeat it to them when they start behaving in a disrespectful way. It is so prevalent in the Bible, all long the Old Testament and in the New Testament that is easy to remember it and insist on it. Until you arrive at Ephesians 6:4.
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
This verse underlines the importance of behaving well as a parent before starting to teach our kids the instructions of the Lord.
Origin
The Bible asks us, as parents to be honourable before teaching our kids to honour us. Therefore, the Bible prevents us from abusing our “power”. Also parents, who believe that our first duty is to instruct our children in the commandments of God, need to be honourable parents.
And this is not easy. Being honourable parents is not something you can learn before you become a mom or a dad. That means that it is something we can only do when we are actually parenting.
But it is worth it. It became easier for our children to honour us as parents when:
- They learn from us that we, too, submit to a higher Authority, that is, God.
- They see us forgiving each other.
- They see how we honour our parents and all of our family of origin.
- We say sorry to them for our sins and shortcomings.
- We ask them to pray for us and our weakness.
When we are open to making their duty to honour us easy, it seems to become really more enjoyable for the children to do so.
Being an honourable parent is not a way of becoming friends with our children. Instead, it shows them that our authority above them is a way to glorify God and how we can grow together as His children.
Unfortunately, this duty for parents is something to work on every day because it is very difficult to fight the sin that has completely broken the relationship between parents and children. But we can find peace in the truth that God has already forgiven us in Jesus for our failure in being easy-to-honour parents!
